Can I fix the Dodges charging system
In this video, I work on the 1998 Dodge Ram 2500. It was not charging the battery, so I did some troubleshooting and found the alternator did not produce any power. I then removed the alternator and made an attempt to fix it.

Another Project
Просмотров 25021 день назад
I ended up getting another vehicle. Not that I really needed another project, but this one is pretty cool. It is a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500. It has a V10 with 4-wheel drive. It should be an interesting truck to fix back up.
Steering gear on the trike
Просмотров 18221 день назад
I got a rack and pinion steering gear installed in the trike, which should be much better than the four-wheeler steering that was on it before. I did put some new valve stems in as well, and got the tires to hold air, that part didn't record because I got a text message while the video was recording and it cut off the video without recording it. At least it was a little bit of progress.
Centurion is Back! Thank you everyone for the advice
Просмотров 166Месяц назад
I got the problem fixed! It was a wire in the harness to the O2 sensor. Two wires were touching just enough to cause the fuel mixture to go extremely lean. It was not supplying enough fuel to keep the engine idling. I appreciate the suggestions from everyone, It did end up helping.
The Centurion is Sick. Help!

I was going to work on the trike in this video, but the Centurion has developed a problem. I have been trying to diagnose it but needed help figuring it out. I tried all the usual things to try and make it run, and it still isn't right. I think maybe it might be bad fuel, but I'm not sure of that.
Making Progress on the Homemade Trike Revival

In this video I get the trike running and driving from a key switch in the cab. I also get the cooling system patched up, mostly.
Reviving an old project. Will it run?
Просмотров 875Месяц назад
In this video, I start working on one of my old projects. A few years ago I built a reverse trike from an old scooter. It got put away and forgotten after a crash. It wouldn't start after I rolled it over and of course, I had other projects going at the time. Let's see if we can do something with this old trike. #trike #homemade #scooter #motorcycle #diy
Final Reckoning Laptop finished

I have the DIY laptop finished. The name I decided to call it is the Final Reckoning Laptop. Not the best name, but I guess it works. Here is a list of materials I used. I had most of this lying around except the keyboard. A lot of the materials were no longer available but I found equivalents. This list doesn't include a cell phone. You will also need various wires, and switches of whatever st...

I'm on the other side of the world in England learning from you to cut some wood! The Internet really is a wonderful thing! Thank you for this!
I’d love to see foam skinned with uncoated breathable 1oz ripstop nylon and WBPU and/or titebond compared to regular duck canvas and wood glue PMF, for super ultralight applications like pedal powered bike campers
COULD IT BE THE PCV VALVE? AFTER I CHANGED IT ON 2008 CORROLLA I CAN SEE THE POWER INCREASED NO MORE LAG LIKE BEFORE.
These do not have a PCV valve. The closest there is to PCV is the tiny hole in the intake manifold. I did add a PCV valve to the oil cap, this and the cleaning seems to have fixed it.
195,000 miles on my 13 terrain. I use bardahl no smoke with stop leak. Reduces the oil consumption to about 1/10 a quart every thousand miles. Every 1000 miles as well remove the intake and clean the oil that collects inside the manifold. Car runs beautifully with a lil tlc.
could you wire the relay to the power buttons in the actual thermostat of the diesel heater instead of relying on the remote?
Thank u very much sir
Thats a mega upgrade not a lil bit lmao
Yes it is a good upgrade. Makes a big difference.
Nice simple build and you explained building very good. Great job!
Thank you
I was looking for this video, if 20V trimmer can handle a blade. But I will order adapter kit and a 8inch light weight brush saw from amazon. Thanks for sharing
I want to have that done on mine, but I also want to have it to where I can choose when I want to engage the front diff just by itself. only reason is I got a new tcase 4 low works great 4 high it wont engage up front I've already changed the switch in the tcase nothing changed I like having everything when I want it to work the flip switch is awesome. How should I wire this to basically force it to engage the front.
Thanks, you did a great job.
Good job
Nice update Luke. 👍🏻
Mine stuck on heat also. Lets see if this works
Thanks for the help. I did one today and struggled a bit to get the old sensor out and new one in but ultimately did so using my jack to break the bead and collapse the sidewall. The bead sealed right away which I was concerned about. Glad I got the relearn tool and a valve installation bar. Need to do the other 3 once they go bad.
Glad it helped. The more I use this system the more I like it.
Can you spray throttle body cleaner in the hole to help clean it more?
Yes that would work. Good idea.
Sweet naughty li'l kitty!
yes lol.
there are many saw blades with round / (knock out holes that have the Dimond shape ) the right size washer on the thread side( inside diameter ) thinner than the blade would center the blade or drilling the blade to the size size washer you can find thinner than the blade
Thanks for the tip!
Luke, we miss you on the D.O.W. Forum buddy. Awesome setup, I hope you're still driving this truck around.
I still drive the truck, but I took out the gasifier as I am going to be changing the bed. It started showing a lot of rust. I'll either build a flatbed, or try to find a good used bed.
I have used muslin and glue for “Dutchman” seams on theatre set designs, on a wood frame. I think that muslin would work even better than canvas or bed sheets. The only question I have is was the canvas and bedsheets washed and dried before using to prevent shrinking or if maybe shrinking would help tighten the cloth to the substrate? Muslin is very inexpensive and comes in wide enough widths that you can do large walls without seams.
Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out.
Luke .. I know there are fixes like what you have shown .. I've taken alternators to a local shop and had them rebuilt .. while I watched. I have a small Ford tractor .. the alternator isn't working .. I've been charging the battery every couple days of use. I just need to do what you have done .. and even if it's not the fix .. I appreciate the mental walk through! Stuff that needs doin' lol 🙂
Yes it is always fun to fix something instead of buying new. It is for me anyway lol. It is worth a try, anyway.
I used to reman my own alternators. I don't know if you can still get all the parts or not for them. Dad taught me that it was cheaper and smarter to go buy bearings, brushes, and a diode bridge for a fraction of the cost of a reman unit and end up with a better alternator in most cases because the bearings were much better. It was usually always the diode bridge. I mostly owned Fords so the regulator wasn't in the alternator.
I'm used to GM alternators so this one was kind of new to me. I looked up a rebuild kit for it and it was like $60. It was for rebuilding this factory 90 amp alternator. I was going to get it but I saw a 150 amp alternator for $130 I believe I'll just get the bigger alternator. I'll have to run a bigger wire to the battery but I think that is the way to go in my case.
@@lukeFugate that is absolutely what I would do. Rebuild the 150 in the future if you ever have to. Most of my cars I put larger alternators in because I was into everything from high power audio amplifiers to high power linears for CB radio. I also have an addiction to lights lol.
does not work on some year/model combos, i have a 2003 E-350 XLT Super Duty extended with the Triton V10. the refrigerant lines under the hood on mine are not quick disconnect, the lines are permanently crimped onto their T-fittings. only way on my van seems to be the disconnect point under the brake booster. oh well, thats what i get for hoping that I'd ever buy the easy model of anything lol
Sorry it won't work for you. Sounds about like my luck.
Glad it's just the alternator! Good for now, at least.
Yes, it charges pretty good now. I did find a 150 amp alternator though so I think I'll go with that. Should be better for what I need.
We used to replace brushes whenever we opened up the alternator for any reason if we had the correct ones. Always shined up the copper like you did too. Good fix! Btw, I really love that t-shirt.
Thanks. I started to look up a kit to rebuild this one, and found a 150 amp alternator that will bolt right in. The original one is 90 so I will just swap it out. The shirt is true lol.
All you need is brushes.
True, I found a rebuild kit for it, but on the same page, they had a bigger alternator for it. I'll just get that one.
I just opened one up. Blow some air in it and lubricate. Wire brush.
Sometimes, you can just spray in some wd40 and keep going. I'm getting a bigger alternator for it now, though.
Thanks much. Didn't know how to deal with the auto choke.
Glad it helped.
It’s sad to see Zephyr go but will be interesting to see what you do to this truck. 👍🏻
Yeah, It will be hard to see Zephyr drive away, but I know it will help my son and daughter in law out. Not sure what I'll do with the Dodge, but it could come in handy.
Hopefully your new steering setup works far better. Great to see the trike again. 👍🏻
It does! I need to make a video soon updating. The new steering makes a world of difference.
Do you have one built to sell me?
Sorry, I can't build them to sell. It is pretty easy to do though.
Thank you for the video, very helpful for my 68 Nova three on the tree, 6cyl 230 cu.
Glad it was helpful!
Yeah that v10 will be very fuel efficient lol. But you know you can put viper heads on that and be a cheaper head upgrade.
Yes I've heard that. Might be something to look into.
@@lukeFugate yeah I heard they were pretty much the same. 1 is cast iron and one is aluminum.
My 2012 has 240k on it. I keep up on the oil and check it often. Yes I have noticed it uses oil. My gf has a 2017 and hers uses oil too but she doesn't check it much. I've told her she needs to keep up on it
Good to hear yours has lasted that many miles. So far it has been a very dependable vehicle for me. Yeah checking and changing oil is very important.
@lukeFugate I am thinking of taking it to the shop to have the PCV mod done though.
I put seafoam In the oil and now it diesels when I shut it off.
@ericzerkle8486 it might stop doing that when you change the oil. Not sure what would cause that, usually a fuel issue I think
@ericzerkle8486 actually after I looked it up carbon deposits can cause dieseling. The carbon holds heat and acts like a glow plug. The seafoam probably knocked some of it loose and it's letting it diesel. I think it was carboned up pretty bad and might need another treatment through the vacuum line.
Luke, do you still have old blue?
Are you talking about the truck in my profile pic? If so, yes I still have Ol' Green. She needs a transmission as it rattles badly and I'm afraid to much more than just drive slow in the yard.
Very nice setup, love the awning and swingout kitchen. You're somewhere between MacGyver and Fred Sandford!
Thanks, I guess that is a complement lol.
😂😂😂😂 shaking my head..here we go again..👍
😁 Yep!! Not going too crazy with this one though.
Great job my friend
Thank you 👍
❤❤❤, This, Very Nice! Can't wait to see the process of what you will create. 💯✌️🙏❤️🕯️🎈🌻😊
Thanks! It is a pretty cool truck, just needs a little help.
It looks to be a good truck, and you did your son some good, too. I bet if you put a 1 bbl carburetor off an old 198 6 on it (a really easy swap, i'm sure), you'll get at least 80 mpg ... meters per gallon, anyway. I love that it has a red wire for the ground ... an even better idea than my carburetor suggestion.
I will miss seeing Zephyr outside, but it's going to a good home. My son seems pretty excited to get started converting it. That Dodge has lived a bit of a rough life till he got it. I think the previous owner used it for a four-wheeling toy and wasn't easy on it. It'll come back around though. I do have a couple of ideas to help with mileage.
I suspect that you're a pretty wonderful father.
@@dsteele27 Thank you! I try my best, they are great kids and they deserve it.
Great looking truck Luke. It's showing some rough use, but nothing too bad that it can't be fixed. It'll be interesting watching you bring it back to life. I love that the frame shows no rust, and hope you'll have a lot of fun working on it. I have a Nephew who is running a food service trailer, and they do pretty well at it. Good luck to your Son on his new business.
Thanks 👍I think I can bring it back around. I don't think it will take that much to get it back to where I want it. I do hope they do well with the food truck. They already stay busy just making and delivering stuff from their home.
pretty frustrating you didnt get this out on the road .
This car was just a test unit to make sure the gasifier worked. It is not street legal anymore and not safe on the road. I ended up putting the entire system in my Silverado and drove it on wood. Here is a video of the first road trip on woodgas. ruclips.net/video/U_3XAhbuV0s/видео.html
I didn't make a comment about your weight distribution .. but another thing you might consider is to move your front axle back a little so your feet are more out in front. I'm going to leave you a link to Paul Elkins channel .. he has built a trike and I think you'll enjoy what he has done. ruclips.net/video/wx3ocNQeJ8U/видео.html
Yes, I like Paul's channel, he has some great builds. I could move the seat and controls forward some to help the weight distribution. At this point moving the front suspension would be kind of hard.
Looks like a much improved steering system in progress. I agree that the front end could sure use some more weight.
Yes, I have a few ideas to transfer some weight. I should be close to a hardware store today to pick up some smaller clamps. I guess it is getting there slowly.
I bought a new oil cap that has a pressure valve built into it. I think it does the same job.
It does help. I guess I just like the idea of having the pcv.
Love your video. Same issue with (2) E-350's Now I got the fix. Thank you !!!
Hope it helps you thanks for watching!
@@lukeFugate Well, I was about to try it on my van, and both my E-350's 2003, and 2005 do not have the pipe configuration you have. Damn, no release coupled lines up front or in either location, passenger or driver side. Onto plan B. Got to get air up front working at least in the 05.
I want to build on of these one day? Great job "making it yours" 👍🏻
Thanks! They are fun little vehicles.
Just fixed it. Traded it in for a Dodge.
Probably a good move.
Never inflate ANY tire that is not held securely in place !
Good tip.
Unfortunately I replaced the very actuator you show in your video but I am still only getting hot air out, no matter what direction i choose to vent. ie. defrost , down by the feet , or a combination of feet and upper body , all of those which are controlled by the switch to the right of the temp selector. Is it possible it is the SWITCH ??? itself that controls the temperature that is faulty ?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and have a great day.
It could have also been a defective new part. I have had that before with new parts.
@@lukeFugate Ya , I suppose that is possible , I never thought of that, thanks.
